A major IT manufacturer welcomed a group of our students for a tour of its facilities.

About 30 Year 7 and 8 students visited Stone Computers in Staffordshire at the end of last term to learn about the company and careers in its industry.

There was a lot of interest in the trip so to win a place on it the students had to write a letter to Design and Technology teacher Nigel Barrett explaining why they believed they should go.

Mr Barrett said: “The students were given a tour of the sales floor, the factory and the warehouse.

“They saw the production line, how the company sets up computers and how they recycle computers.

“The students were fascinated to see company’s fork lift truck because the operator goes up with it and they really enjoyed seeing where the computers are made.

“We enjoyed seeing the big recycling machine which separates old computers into plastics and metals so the pieces can be sold.

“The students also learned about different careers and apprenticeships in the industry so it was a really valuable trip.”

The company’s group compliance director Martin Ruston was also particularly impressed with Kara, who is one of our students, for her suggestion that it advertises recycling on the computers that it sells.
