Our talented students are taking part in the final of a competition to tackle drink related crime today.

About 4,000 students entered Northamptonshire Police’s County Schools’ Challenge this year during which students had to pitch ideas on how to tackle drink related crime to a Dragons Den style judging panel.

Our team was one of just eight which made it through to the final which is being held at the Castle Theatre in Wellingborough today.

PCSO Alex Franklin, who works with Corby Technical School, said: “The students had to come up with a business plan which they present to the board of judges.

“One of our students has designed a computer game. If the player gets through the levels without drinking too much they don’t have a fight at the end and they win the game.

“The game is accessed through a QR code which will be put on the back of mobile phone covers along with the number of a local taxi firm.

“One of the problems the police face is how to disperse people at the end of a night out. The students hope by putting the number of a taxi firm on mobile phone covers it will help people to return home more quickly.”

CTS Assistant Principal Elizabeth James added: “It’s the first time the students have taken part in this competition and I have been really impressed with how well they have prepared themselves for it.

“During the semi-final they were asked lots of challenging questions about their product and they produced some very good answers.

“I think the judges were particularly impressed with the app for the computer game. They seemed shocked to find out that one of our students had created it.

“I’m very proud of them all. To get to the final alone is a huge achievement.”

The County Schools’ Challenge is an annual event aimed at seeking to address a social problem using a business solution.
