Corby Technical School recently held a physics conference for Year 11 students. The OCR physics Chief Examiner Howard Dodd visited the school to show students a range of techniques to help them prepare for their GCSE exam.

The workshop was split into 3 sections and focused on the modules for core, additional and triple science.

Mr Dodd went through past papers and showed students how to structure their answers. He discussed how they could use techniques such as bullet points to help them make clear points and achieve higher marks on longer questions.

Year 11 student Ed said ‘It has been really helpful. He showed us videos of experiments that we could use as visual reminders for the exam.’

Year 11 student Reece said ‘ He gave us a run down of all the key things we would need to know for the exam.’

Year 11 student Alice said ‘It was a really useful day because he explained how repetition can be useful for remembering things in an exam. He suggested that we go through the paper when we get it and answer the questions we feel most confident about first to help us secure marks.

‘It made me feel a lot better about the exam actually having someone from the exam board visit us, they know exactly what the exams will be like because they create the papers.’

Vice Principal Mr Sam Strickland said ‘We decided to start running conferences with the exam boards as a way to help students maximise their potential. It also supports the high quality of teaching that goes on in the school on a day-to-day basis.’

This is the first exam board conference the school has hosted and we are very pleased with the positive feedback received from the students.  We currently have a number of conferences planned to support other subjects.
