Students are delving into the worlds of murder and mystery as they have begun learning about the detective novel genre.

Sherlock Holmes will be the star of the show as the students will be reading some of his short stories and a novel. As part of the topic, students will be writing their own detective stories, inventing their own cluedo style board games and undertaking murder mystery investigations.

They will also be using an innovative IPAD app to compose different openings to a Sherlock Holmes tale.

The topic will also include more modern classics like Agatha Christie novels and the Morse series and a box filled with different detective novels has been placed in the library.

English Teacher Cathy Gaunt said: “The detective novel is a really interesting genre and obviously the Sherlock Holmes stories are classics that have stood the test of time.

“This topic is stretching many students’ reading abilities and I have been impressed with how well they have been getting on and the enthusiasm that has been shown.”

Student Robbie Harper is enjoying the topic so much that in his spare time he is reading the new novel by Anthony Horowitz, which is a tribute to the detective’s author Arthur Conan Doyle.

He said: “It has been difficult as it is an adult novel and is written in old fashioned language, but I am learning so much and the plot has gripped me.

“I am enjoying it so much that I reading it at school during lunch breaks and also when I get home after school.”
