A team of our students pitted their technical skills against pupils from across the county when they took part in the Rotary Club’s Technology Tournament.

Ollie Steadman, Charlie Hodgkinson, Jess Christensen and Robbie Harper took part in the event held at Weston Favell Academy on Wednesday, March 20th and did themselves proud by coming third in their category.

The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Nene Valley in association with the University of Northampton as part of National Science and Technology Week.

After arriving at their destination, the students– who called themselves the Speedy Cheetahs - were tasked with the challenge of building a vehicle that could transport a 20gm weight.

The team, which was competing at the foundation level (for students in Year 7 to 9), set about designing the vehicle on paper before using the provided materials to construct their car.

Charlie said: “It definitely helped that we come from a Technical School as we take part in weekly challenges in our Stem afternoon sessions and this practical experience really helped us.”

Robbie added: “We had come across all of the tools provided before so this saved time.”

After three hours of build time the team put their wooden vehicle to the test and discovered it could travel 18 inches while carrying the weight.

Building Manager Ian Fullerton, who went along with the students to the event said: “I was really impressed with how well they worked as a team and the thought they put into the design. The judges commented on the way they had positioned the slide on the vehicle as this helped propel it along.”
