Yesterday, a group of students listened to talk given by author Louise Jensen. Louise writes physiological thrillers and her first novel ‘The Sister’ quickly reach number 1 in the UK, where it stayed for 5 weeks, knocking JK Rowling off the top spot.

During her time at the Academy, Louise sat with students from Year 9 to 12 and explained how she became a writer, how she managed to get her book publisher and spoke about the things that inspire her writing.

Louise told the students that when she was at school she was told that writing was not a career and to get a job in an office. Louise said ‘So I took the advise and got a job in an office but was very unhappy. I was then in a car accident that left me in a wheel chair for a long period of time so I started to write but didn’t know how to get my story publisher. I then heard about a self-publishing group and went along and this when it all started to happen.'

After telling her story, Louise shared varies techniques to give then students ideas of how they can find inspiration to start a story. She said ‘ I take inspiration from all around me. I also don’t really believe in writers block. I think when you get stuck and find it difficult to write it’s because you took a wrong turn in your story. I often go back a little bit and take the story in another direction.’

The session finished with a Q&A session. She said ‘I really enjoy going out to the schools and sharing my story. I think it’s important that students are aware of their career options. I wish there had been author visits when I was at school and then I would have know that was a career.’

Louise's fourth psychological thriller is due to be published in June 2018.
