Year 8 students paid a visit Twycross Zoo to enrich their learning in science lessons.

The whole year visited the zoo for the day in August.

Director of Science, Victoria Khan, said: “We went to a talk on behaviour and classification – the students have just been studying classification so they were able to understand it in action.

“Specifically it was focused on invertebrates and anthropods.

“The students got to see a variety of different animals – they got to stroke chinchillas, they touched a hissing cockroach and a bearded dragon.

“They found out all sorts of different information about classification.

“When we were walking around the zoo we looked at the bonobo, which is the primate most closely related to humans. They are similar to chimpanzees but more lanky and their behaviour is much more human-like in the way they interact.

“The students were quite surprised by the variety of different monkeys and primates, they enjoyed it and found out a lot about endangered organisms and their position on the Red List in terms of how endangered they are.”

The students also got the chance to see lemurs being fed.

Back at school, each Year 8 student has researched an endangered species and given a presentation on the subject following the visit. Some of the endangered species students have given presentations on include the pink river dolphin.
