Year 7s took part in a challenge to design a suitable raft to protect an egg from cracking while going down a ramp.

The students worked in groups to design and make their own sledges to keep their egg whole.

Teacher Nigel Barrett said: “I explained the problem, which is that moving eggs have kinetic energy and if this energy is transferred directly to the egg, it will break. So the challenge was to find a way of protecting the egg from this energy.

“I showed them an example of protecting a human in a car, which was similar to what we were doing with the eggs.

"They had 45 minutes to create their own sledge for their egg. They had some really good ideas.

“Out of 15 eggs, only four broke.”
