20-01 Praise for Young Leaders

Our students helped to host an athletics competition for disabled children from across the county.

The Northamptonshire School Games Project Ability Level 3 Sportshall Athletics Competition for primary and secondary students was held at our school last week.

A group of our students received training to act as Young Leaders at the competition and were on hand to lead the competitors through the activities and to help record results.

PE teacher Louise Feeley said: “The event was brilliant and the students were amazing.

“They did a great job working with children they hadn’t met before and they behaved very responsibly.

“Several members of staff from other schools complimented them on their behaviour.”

Corby, Oundle and Thrapston School Sport Partnership schools sports manager Matthew Peleszok said: “All of these students were a credit to the school throughout the day.

“The students supported both primary and secondary aged pupils ranging from seven to 16 which meant the leaders had to adapt their communications skills to suit the age and ability of the groups they worked with.”

The event gave the competitors the chance to compete in teams in a pentathlon style competition made up of Standing Long Jump, Shuttle Runs, Target Throw, Chest Push and Speed Bounce.

The Young Leaders will represent the School Sports Partnership again at the Northamptonshire School Games County Finals in February when over the course of a week more than 1,000 competitors and Young Leaders will represent their schools at the largest multi-sport competition in the county.

Project Ability was created to give more young disabled pupils the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.
