German is an exciting, logical, almost mathematical language, which opens up the world to you. If you enjoy communicating with people, finding out how language works and learning about different countries and cultures, studying German at Corby Technical School is an excellent opportunity for you. There are, however, many other additional reasons for studying German:
•As global citizens, learning a foreign language provides valuable educational and social experiences. Students develop communication and literacy skills which lay the foundations for their future. Learning another language raises awareness of our multilingual and multicultural world and introduces an international dimension to students' learning, giving them an insight into their own culture and those of others. In a world which has become increasingly competitive and international, studying German can make a huge difference to students' future life chances. They will create greater opportunities for themselves to work abroad, or to work for companies in the UK with international links. Many employers look for people who speak a foreign language.
•The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for the reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects.
•You will learn many skills, which are useful in a wide range of future careers, such as the ability to communicate clearly, be confident about speaking in public and how to use problem–solving strategies.
At Corby Technical School, German is studied through two timetabled lessons per week. Our aim is to expose pupils to a range of situations for the purpose of practical communication in German-speaking countries with a view to preparing solid foundations for studying this language at GCSE and beyond.
In addition, an extra-curricular German Club is offered twice a week so that students can expand their knowledge and practise the language studied in class.
Languages are taught in topic-based units. Vocabulary acquisition and effective communication are primary aims, together with learning the basic skills of listening and reading. Grammar and accurate writing is progressively introduced through the course.
Teaching takes place as much as possible in the target language and pupils are encouraged to use German when communicating in class. Textbooks are supplemented by authentic materials and interactive/on-line resources and activities.
We aim to make the use of a foreign language relevant, authentic, real and fun. Trips to Germany and France also help to enrich the in-school languages curriculum.
