11-11 Year 7 students take on bridge building project

Our Year 7 students were challenged to design and build a weight bearing bridge during one of their latest STEM lessons.

Our Year 7 students were challenged to design and build a weight bearing bridge during one of their latest STEM lessons.

The students built their 50cm long bridge from scrap paper and then tested its strength by placing weights on it.

CTS Science Technician Matthew Fellows said: “The project taught the students about material properties and how to build structures with structural integrity.

“It gave them a practical view of structural engineering and they all worked hard on the project.”

The team who had the greatest success was made up of Year 7 students Ewan, Luke, Scott, George and A-Jay.

They produced a bridge which could hold 8kg.

Ewan said: “We discussed various designs and worked on the best one. Once we had built the bridge we considered where we could place the weights strategically to enable the bridge to carry the most weight.

“We were really pleased to do so well.”
