Year 9 student have recently visited universities to find out what university life is like.

A group of 15 students went to the Department of Engineering at Cambridge to watch fourth year students present their final projects.

They received hands on experience by participating in activities such as taking apart and reassembling a fan, building a flexible and collapsible bridge and designing paper aeroplanes and other paper products.

Mr Mark Bidwell said ‘We organise the trip annually to shows the students what they are capable of as well as give them an insight into university life. They also pick up key information and advice such as how to apply.

‘The one piece of advice the students found most helpful this year was to consider the university course you want to study before selecting your A level choices as these are reflected in the entry requirements.’

A larger group of 73 students attended the trip to the University of Northampton.

Students experienced a real taste of university life by taking part in mini lectures about sociology and the media as well as the dangers of social media. They were then given a tour of the facilities and accommodation.

Mr Bidwell said ‘The idea of the trip was to get students learning about what was on offer at university and encourage them to start thinking about their potential routes.’
