16-07 Students visit recycling centre

Our students learned how staff at a recycling centre deal with up to 200 tonnes of rubbish every day during one of our latest excursions.

A group of Year 7 and 8 students visited the centre in Wellingborough as part of their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) lessons.

During the trip the students learned how the centre generates electricity from the waste and were introduced to the facility’s peregrine falcon which scares smaller birds away from the site.

Design and Technology teacher Nigel Barrett said: “Last year staff from the facility visited us to talk about recycling and this trip was a follow-up to that talk.

“The facility receives between 160 and 200 tonnes of rubbish a day and the staff said the main difference between now and 10 years ago is the amount of rubbish which is now recycled.

“The staff explained to our students how they generate electricity from the gas which comes off the waste.

“It’s great that we have made another good industry contact and following our visit to the centre we have begun to recycle paper and plastics at school.”
