11-09 Humanutopia helps students to unlock their potential

More than 100 students have taken part in a course designed to help them unlock their full potential.

More than 100 students have taken part in a course designed to help them unlock their full potential.

Visitors from Humanutopia ran the course yesterday and today to encourage our Year 8 and 9 students to reflect on their lives and learn new life skills.

Humanutopia is a social enterprise company which has worked with more 200,000 young people across the UK and has run courses in more than 150 schools.

Humanutopia Lead Facilitator Steve Bicket said: “We’re called Humanutopia because we want to show we are all human beings and we want people to get along.

“We talk to students about the most important things in their lives – their relationships.

“We talk about the barriers to learning, life skills and what stops them being the person they want to be such as image and bullying.

“Then we show them how the future can be if they work together and talk to them about their aspirations and dreams.

“School is about qualifications and qualities. What we are saying is you need qualifications to get you into job interviews but then employers will look at what qualities you have before they think about offering you a job.”

During the sessions the students talked about a variety of topics, including respect, trust and how to resolve problems.

At the end of the sessions they were invited to sit in the Dream Chair and share their dreams for the future with the rest of their year group.

Inspector Vaughan Clarke, of Northamptonshire Police, secured the funding for Humanutopia to visit all the secondary schools in Corby.

He said: “When I first saw Humanutopia I thought they were fantastic and I wanted to arrange for them to visit all our schools.”
