20-01 Philosophy Cafe opens for debate

We have started a new after school club to enable students to debate the big topics of today.

We have started a new after school club to enable students to debate the big topics of today.

Every week Philosophy Café will pose a new topic for discussion and it launched last week with the topic: Laws and Rules are designed to control us. We will never be individually free if we are not at liberty to do what we want.

The topic generated a lively debate but in the end it was neither carried nor defeated but dismissed as students voted neutrally on it.

CTS Director of English Markus Wilson, who is co-ordinating Philsophy Café said: “This group gives our students an opportunity to develop their reasoning and arguing skills which will in turn improve their writing skills.

“The first week went very well. We attracted students of all ages and it was very positive.

“We are always trying to broaden our students’ extra-curricular activities.”

Tomorrow the group will discuss the topic: There will always be inequality in the world. It cannot exist without it.

It is open to all students and will meet from 4.15pm to 5pm in the Library.

Refreshments are provided to make it feel like a café.
