CTS and BWA students visit web design company
Year 13 Computer Science students from Corby Technical School and Brooke Weston Academy had an insight into a leading web design company when they visited MMT Digital.
The company, based in Uppingham, has collaborated with Mr Gourlay, Director of Computing and Mrs Thompson who oversees careers at Corby Technical School.
Mrs Thompson said: ‘We have made links with MMT as they are a leading company in their field. They wanted to know what we are teaching in the classroom and would it actually match the skill set required in the workplace? The visit was to show our Sixth Formers what is needed and possible in the real world, and we are hoping to liaise further in the future, so that we can equip and empower our younger students to have the skills and attributes they will need for a successful future career and MMT may well have an input into what we deliver in our curriculum. STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) are our specialism and so they naturally link to these technology-based careers.’
Mr Gourlay said: ‘Part of the Computer Science curriculum at A-Level requires a knowledge and understanding of the working practices used in the software industry. A particular working methodology used in the software industry is “Agile”, which involves a close relationship between the client and the developers to ensure that the product continually evolves and improves throughout the development process. MMT Digital created their own tool called the “Agile Board Game” which they use to explain the Agile process to new clients who may not be familiar with the working practice. Students had the opportunity to play the game to gain an unrivalled understanding of the process. Not only will this be useful for their A-Level study, but it will also aid any students who wish to explore career opportunities in the software industry.’
