30-01 Fairy tale inspires Gingerbread house project

A German fairy tale has inspired our students to create tasty treats with pretty packaging.

A German fairy tale has inspired our students to create tasty treats with pretty packaging.

Our Year 7 students decided to make and decorate German gingerbread houses, and create packaging for them, after studying the story of Hansel and Gretel which features a large cottage made of gingerbread.

German teacher Liz Loake has been leading the project during the students’ STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) sessions.

She said: “We took inspiration from the fairy tale Hansel and Gretel to link the work we were doing back to German.

“The students researched the ingredients in English and German and they have been developing their measuring skills during the project as well as their team-building and communication skills.

“They also designed and created packaging for their gingerbread houses.

“The students have been really enthusiastic about the project and it’s helped to teach them how to follow instructions.”

By the end of the year all Year 7 students will have taken part in the project.
