This term, students have been getting ready to take part in Tomorrow’s Engineering regional heats Robotics challenge at the Rolls Royce Development Centre, Derby in March.

The Year 8 students have been researching robotics coding, engineering and the use of motors and sensors including colour sensors, touch sensors and gyroscopic sensors. The students have then used what they have learnt to design and build their LEGO robots. The robots will be used on the day to try and complete a variety of aviation themed missions.

Computer Science Teacher Mr Gourlay said ‘The students have been really committed to preparing for this competition. A particular challenge has been the creation of robots made to climb hills and go at high speed. This has meant that students have had to consider gearing to ensure they get enough torque – particularly for the uphill section.'

‘The competition teaches the students many skills such as mechanics, forces and motions, trigonometry, angles, data logging and more. By increasing students understanding of these topics, it allows the students to see the types of careers and industries they could possibly go into.’

If the students are successful int he heats they will be invited to the national final at the Big Bang Fair at the Birmingham NEC on Friday 16th March.

We wish them all the very best of luck.
