At CTS we are currently embarking on the CREST awards aimed at developing the analytical and problem solving skills of student in year 8. STEMNET co-ordinator Jack recently came in and introduced the criteria for the awards and enthused the students towards the tasks on offer. He highlighted the skills shortage the UK currently faced with regards to Engineering and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) related careers.

During the activity students travelled round in a carousel experiencing 3 possible projects they can embark on for the next 10 weeks. These included a ‘stop-frame’ animation project, a ‘Design for a Better World’ looking at the 17 United Nations targets for making the world a better place and designing solutions to these problems and the design and production of a healthy energy drink to tackle the obesity issues the government are addressing. At the end, students chose the project they felt they could contribute to and that appealed to them.

Director of Design Technology and Technology Mr Neil Crook said ‘The CREST awards are a wonderful way for students to get one step ahead as they move on in the educational pathways into GCSE courses, A levels and ultimately college places.

‘We look forward to seeing some fantastic, ‘free-thinking’ solutions to these problems.’
