02-12 Skills Show helps students find their career paths

More than 50 of our Year 10 students attended the nation’s largest skills and careers event.

More than 50 of our Year 10 students attended the nation’s largest skills and careers event.

The students visited The Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham to learn about a wide variety of careers, work experiences, apprenticeships, traineeships and volunteer opportunities.

Vice Principal Linda Arnold said: “It was a very positive experience for our students. It enabled them to look at a range of post-16 options.

“It opened their eyes to a wide range of apprenticeships and to opportunities for further study.”

Year 10 student Declan, 14, won a £100 model of a Tarmac machine when he demonstrated his construction skills on one of the company’s earth moving machine simulators.

He said: “I won the competition because I moved the largest amount of dirt with the earth moving simulator in five minutes.

“My Dad owns a construction firm so it has always been an industry I’ve been interested in.

“This visit confirmed for me that I want to go into that industry because even with all the opportunities on show at the event that was still the business I was most interested in.

“I would like to eventually go into project management.”
