Students explore the world of engineering at Loughborough University

A group of students studying A-level physics visited Loughborough University on Tuesday to help them gain an insight into the world of engineering.

The trip was part of the Engineering in Education Scheme run by the Engineering Development Trust. The visit allowed the students the opportunity to work on part of an on-going project they are completing with TATA Steel. The project provides students with a real life-engineering problem, which they need to come up with a solution for.

As part of the project, the students are required to build a prototype for their idea to prove that their concept works. During their time at Loughborough, they were able to use the extensive facilities and obtained advice on writing their final report and presentation from a number of experts.

Throughout the day, the students also found out all about engineering based careers. They attended a lecture on the various opportunities available to those who choose to study engineering at Loughborough University. Some were even lucky enough to meet with representatives from the British armed forces to discuss military engineering careers.

Teacher Mr David Godfrey said ‘The trip allowed the students to apply knowledge they have gained throughout the A-level physics course so far. The students gained valuable practical experience and now have a far clearer idea the future they could potentially have as engineers and of how to achieve the gold CREST award.’
