26-06: Making bridges

Students learnt all about the discipline of bridge building during an exciting STEM session.

Two graduate members and two current students from the Institute of Structural Engineers visited Corby Technical School earlier this month to teach students about

David Knight, Matthew Letts, Yann Siewe and Ywi Yuklau gave a talk about their pathway into the industry before tasking students with making their own bridge.

The practical activity involved constructing their bridge out of paper, string and sellotape and then piling their creations with coke cans to see how well they would bear the load.

Teacher Linda Arnold, who organised the activity said: “It was a really fun practical session and as well as finding out more about the structural engineering process, they had lots of fun. We did unfortunately learn however,  that cans of coke can explode when dropped on the floor!”

As part of our school curriculum, a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) session is held every Wednesday afternoon. All of our students come off of their usual timetable and learn take part in a practical activity centred on one of the STEM disciplines.
