We are proud to announce that Miss McGrath (Head of Biology at Corby Technical School) has recently graduated from the SSAT Leadership Legacy Project. This has involved working alongside a Leadership Expert and other colleagues from other schools, as well as engaging with curated content, and submitting a think piece that evidenced her practice. As a Leadership Fellow, Miss McGrath has been given the opportunity to form her vision for education and shape her educational vision within an understanding of the current system. She has also considered different leadership models and been given an opportunity to see these in practice and gain insight through dialogue with a school leader.

  • Music Mark

    Published 30/09/21

We are delighted to announce that we have been nominated by Northamptonshire Music and Performing Arts Trust (NMPAT) to become a Music Mark school in recognition of our commitment to quality music education.

The criteria for nomination are listed below:

    • evidence of a willingness to engage in development conversations related to improving music provision
    • recognition of the value of music education as part of a broad and balanced curriculum
    • a strategy for music in place which provides for all children

Music is a new and developing subject at Corby Technical School: Over the past couple of years, we have invested in high quality music resources, have introduced a full curriculum at Key Stage Three, and have plans to launch GCSE Music and A level Music Technology courses next year. With Miss Patrick joining our staff team this year we have an excellent full time music practitioner who will be delivering curriculum music and ensuring there is parity of experience and continuity for all students in their learning.

Beyond the curriculum, we have partnered with NMPAT to offer specialist instrumental lessons which are available to all students. We have also broadened our extra-curricular offer with a choir, a mixed ensemble and a rock/pop band taking place after school. Next term we will be launching our stage school which will be a multi-disciplinary club combining singing, dance and drama skills. Look out for our first performance at Christmas. We are very excited to share what we have created together!

Every assembly, students enter the theatre in silence, whilst listening to a live music performance. During this time, a PowerPoint slide is displayed to inform the students about the music they are hearing. This broadens our musical horizons and helps to develop a greater understanding of music theory and music history. The staff team have paved the way with performances in term one, and in term two we will start to see students taking the spotlight and sharing their musical talents with their peers in this way.

We are proud to teach creative, enthusiastic students who thrive on inspiration and are open to opportunities offered to them. It is wonderful to receive this recognition for the students and for the school. We can’t wait to see how the music department develops further over the next few years!

  • Lyrical Lockdown

    Published 03/06/21

Several students from different year groups at CTS came together to take part in the Corby Lyrical Lockdown performance last weekend. Mr Cox received contact from the Corby Cube advertising this opportunity and a number of our students were courageous enough to attend. Over a six week programme, they worked with music coaches to compose a song (they collaborated with Olivia from Kingswood on the lyrics). This song was then performed in a brand new performance space in Corby, both to a live audience and an online stream.

The students who took part were:

    • Anthony M (7CU) – DJ
    • Urszula M (8TA) - Keyboard
    • Rhian H (9ST) – Vocals
    • Danielle B (10TA) – Vocals
    • Andrew TH (10CO) – Film and Production Crew

Andrew described it as, ‘one of the best experiences I have had’, and also said, ‘this will help me to kick-start my career in the media industry’. Danielle explained, ‘working as a collective was new to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it’. Rhian told me all about taking part, saying, ‘being in this group is like having a second family. I love how we can be honest  if something goes wrong, but we all support each other too’.

Well done to all those involved. It takes a lot of confidence to put yourself forward for something like this, and you have all certainly done us proud. The students’ passion for music is evident in the performance, as is their sense of ensemble and communication with each other. Hopefully this is the first of many performances our students will do in this wonderful new performance space in the centre of the town.
