Sociology
Sociology, by definition, is the study of society with the focus of this specification being UK society today, and where relevant comparing within a global context.
Sociologists examine the interactions of key groups and institutions in society, exploring the impact the group can have on the institution and vice versa. Such institution include education, the family, religion and the media.
Within the AQA specification we explore reasons for differences in educational achievement between core groups (gender, ethnicity and social class) looking at this from the perspective of key sociological theories. It is important students are able to analyse and critique theories, evidencing each within a sustained argument.
Studying Sociology can help you to better understand the dynamics of our society and begin to find answers to big questions such as; why do the working class commit more crime than the middle class and what influence does the media have on our interactions?
